Thoughts on books: “The Wednesday Wars” is a bittersweet story about a middle grade kid who faces middle grade kid issues with a bit of absurdity, a bit of angst, and a bit of heroism, all while the Vietnam war touches his friends, family, school, and community. After the first few pages, I thought I had gone too young with this book, but I was very soon attached to the character and Gary Schmidt’s gentle while insightful storytelling. It is sometimes sad and often humorous and always relatable. I strongly recommend the WWs for young readers.
